During the winter, our skin can get very dry, irritated, and can even crack or get flakey. As well as with the cold winds and lack of moisture in the air, our skin can get pretty damaged. There are a few things you can do to prevent dry winter skin and to protect your skin from harsh dry weather. 

Prevent dry winter skin by making a few changes to your lifestyle and daily moisturizing routine. Using proper products during the winter will prevent your skin from getting itchy, rough, and from cracking. Dry weather can also cause early signs of aging to your skin. This is why a daily facial skin care routine is also essential during the cold season.

Prevent Dry Winter Skin by Making a Few Changes

Keep your skin smooth and nourished from head to toe by making a few changes in your home, vamping your skincare routine, and using the right skincare products to prevent dry winter skin this year.

  • A humidifier is an excellent way to increase moisture levels in the air. Place a humidifier in the room you spend most of your time in or have one added to your furnace.
  • Placing a shower head filter in your shower will help filter out harsh chemicals that cause dry skin. A water filtering system throughout your home is also a great option.
  • Use laundry detergent for sensitive skin.
  • Try not to sit near fireplaces or heaters for too long as the warm air will evaporate the moisture in your skin.
  • Always protect your skin when outside for an extended period of time, such as wearing gloves or mittens. You can protect your face with a ski mask as well.

How to Prevent Dry Winter Skin for the Face

Here are a few things you can adjust to your skin care routine to help aid your skin during these harsh cold months.

  1. Consider swapping out your usual face wash with micellar water, which is tiny cleansing oil molecules floating in soft water. It gently lifts dirt, oil, and makeup while boosting hydration. If you would rather use face soap, then, a hydrating cleanser is best. belif Aqua Bomb Jelly Cleanser is suitable for this time of year.   2. Vamp your skincare routine with a nourishing facial sheet mask. Take time to do a sheet mask before you go to bed at least once a week. This will help your skin heal from the damage caused by the cold weather and even sun damage that we don’t see yet. This will also replenish your skin with well-needed moisture. It’s also a good idea to use a sheet mask after exfoliating during the winter.
  3. Layer your face and neck with proper skin care products. Apply skincare products that will have your skin looking and feeling supple, such as a water-based cream that will boost hydration, followed by a nourishing moisturizer with long-lasting moisture. Eye cream is also advisable as the eye area also gets dry. After washing your face, your dry skin facial skincare regimen should look like this:
  • Treatment or serum (optional)
  • Hydrating boost with a water-based cream
  • Hydrating eye cream
  • Nourishing moisturizer (night)
  • Moisturizer with SPF (during the day)
  • Lip balm or lip conditioner

Prevent Dry Winter skin for the Body

Besides the few changes listed above, here are a few things you can do to protect and prevent your skin from cracking and feeling itchy.

  1. Shower with warm water (closer to cool), hot water will strip your skin from its natural oils causing your skin to feel itchy.
  2. Use a creamy body wash instead of bar soap or shower gel. Body washes are mixed with oils and creams which are meant to moisturize the skin. Bar soaps tend to remove essential lipids and proteins as well as alter the skin’s pH levels, causing skin irritation. Shower gels typically have a higher concentration of fragrance which can have alcohol.
  3. When you shave use a nourishing oil instead of shaving foam or gel. The oil will soothe your skin, leave your skin feeling soft, and will also moisturize your skin. Be careful though as oil can be slippery; try shaving while sitting down in a bathtub and after you have been soaking for a while as this will soften the hair and cause less irritation. If you are shaving in the shower also sit down and shave right before you step out of the shower.
  4. Boost your skin’s moisture with a warm bath infused with nourishing oils. Doing this at least once a week will really help your skin feel nourished and supple. 
  5. Apply moisturizing lotion on your arms, legs, and back daily. You can also boost the effects of your body lotion for hours of comfort by splashing a body oil a few times to the lotion in your hands before applying it onto your skin. I personally pump Moisture Therapy Calming Relief Body Lotion two in a half times onto the palm of my hand then splash Skin So Soft Supreme Nourishment Triple Phase Body Oil five times to the lotion in my hand, I rub my hands together and apply it to my arms and shoulders. I do the same for the rest of my body, this keeps my skin super soft and keeps the itchiness away till the next day.
  6. Use foot creams to prevent your heels from cracking, this is especially important for people who are diabetic. A foot cream that is catered to diabetics such as Foot Works Intensive Moisture Foot Cream is perfect for them. If you need extra moisture put on socks after you have applied the foot cream. You will wake up with soft and smooth looking feet.
  7. Hand lotion is essential to keep your hands from cracking or looking dry or “old”. Using a hand cream every time you wash your hands will keep the moisture locked into the skin. You can also alleviate irritated hands with hand creams that include oatmeal in them.

If your hands are already cracked or showing signs of extreme dryness, which can feel like your skin is being stretched to the max then you can use a moisturizing gel glove. You would wear the glove on cleansed hands for about 30 minutes at a time for three to four days. After removing the glove apply a healing ointment. This will heal your hands in about three to four days. Once your hands have healed protect them with a Moisture Therapy Daily Defense Hand Cream.
