Perhaps if you are reading this then you are looking for information on how to get rid of acne. You might feel that there is no end to this skin condition and with all the “flawless” people on social media (most of it is photoshop and loads of makeup), you begin to feel self-conscious about yourself and might even feel ugly and helpless. You have probably been told that your acne is due to hormones, stress, lack of hygiene and even that acne has no cure. I know how it feels to have acne and to have no idea how to get rid of acne. I struggled with acne in my mid-twenties until my late thirties. For the past three years, I have had my acne under control now. I would like to share with you how to get rid of acne once and for all.

In this post, I will share with you how to get rid of acne with eating habits, over the counter treatments and a daily skincare routine. Keep in mind I am not a doctor or a dermatologist. I am sharing my experience and what I did to get rid of the acne I had for many years. All it took was a couple of changes to my lifestyle.

Is it really our Hormones?

In Dr. John Pagano, D.C. who is the author of the ground-breaking book Healing Psoriasis: The Natural Alternative mentions a study conducted in Australia this study was done on 50 people between the ages of 15 and 25 all having mild to moderate acne. These 50 people were divided into two groups of 25. One group was instructed to eat a diet of lean meat, poultry, fish, fruits, vegetables, and whole-grain bread and cereals. The second group was given a typical Western diet.

After twelve weeks, the results were shocking: The acne of the group on the higher-protein, low glycemic index diet had improved dramatically by more than 50 percent. The second group on the Western teenager’s typical diet had no change. This group also showed raised hormone levels.

A diet high in processed foods pushes glucose and insulin levels higher, making the problem worse, but healthy foods do the opposite. So technically it’s the food we place in our bodies that drive our hormones crazy.

How to Get Rid of Acne with a Proper Diet

Acne is a way our body communicates to us that we are putting something into our body that is creating toxins. These toxins unbalance our hormones and pollute our organs. Our body finds a way to release the toxins which would be through our skin. Many people that suffer from psoriasis are also going through the same thing. You are what you eat stay away from processed foods, alcohol, sugar, red meats, coffee, and greasy foods. Other foods that can be irritating your gut are the nightshades which are; white potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, okra, goji berries, peppers, tomatillos, sorrel, gooseberries, ground cherries, Pepion melons, tobacco, paprika, cayenne pepper, and capsicum. Only drink plain water with a wedge of lemon if coffee is a must replace it with Match tea. On a daily eat plenty of fruits, veggies, and leafy green salads additionally; you can make your own healthy salad dressing.

The salad dressing is very easy to make simply drizzle extra virgin olive oil, a splash of balsamic vinegar, a squirt of lemon, and a bit of sea salt.

Help your body remove the built-up toxins with an internal cleanse. This cleanse will literally give you a good head start. It’s very simple to make just mix 6 to 8 oz. of warm prune juice or water with one teaspoon of Senna leaf powder drink this for two or three days. It takes about 6 hours for the cleanse to take effect. The cleanse rids your body of gunk that is attached to the walls of your gut and flushes it out of your body.

Always fill your plate with greens and rich fiber foods as well as drinking 4 to 6 water bottles daily (spring water is a better choice). Keep your gut healthy and working properly with probiotics such as kefir and Greek yogurts. Kefir can be found at your local grocery store in the dairy department. You will see results in two weeks after changing your eating habits.

How to Get Rid of Acne with Proper Treatments

As you work on healing the inside of your body you can start to work on the outside. It’s time to get rid of all the useless acne treatments you have stuffed in your medicine cabinet and drawers. Replace them with two small but powerful treatments, you probably think I will say to use something all-natural like coconut oil or castor oil but no it’s not. Don’t get me wrong I like to do DIY and home remedies but sometimes you need the help of modern medicine. I’m talking about Differin Gel and Benzoyl Peroxide. This treatment got rid of the horrifying acne I was living with for many years in a few months!

Differin Gel is a topical acne treatment for mild to moderate acne (I had moderate but very close to severe). It is a retinoid that decreases the swelling and inflammation of the skin and promotes quick healing of acne. It also restores even skin tone, texture and brightens your complexion. Differin Gel cleared my acne and not only did it reduce the size of my pores it also made the dark spots on my face fade away and got rid of the blackheads. I absolutely love this stuff and I highly recommend it. Some people said that Differin Gel made their skin breakout after using it the first time but that did not happen to me, keep in mind every skin is different. If a breakout occurs to your skin don’t stop using the gel it’s doing its job by pushing out the gunk that is clogging your pores.

How to Get Rid of AcneWhile using Differin Gel do not use wax in the areas where the gel is applied doing so will rip off a layer of your skin. Remove unwanted hair by threading or tweezing.

Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl Peroxide works by reducing the amount of acne-causing bacteria. It’s important to keep your skin hydrated and moisturized since this medication can cause your skin to become dry and might cause your skin to peel. Do not use benzoyl peroxide that is over 5% on your face. Anything over 5% is suitable for the rest of your body.

Keeping a good diet and having a daily skincare regimen will significantly reduce future breakouts and you might never have to use acne treatments again. The last time I used the acne treatments was about three years ago.

If you have severe acne I suggest you stop using over the counter products and see a dermatologist. A dermatologist can give you oral medication and stronger topical medication. Once the acne has cleared I would get off the meds, keep my body healthy and have a daily skincare regimen. If you get a flare-up use Differin Gel and Benzoyl Peroxide.

I have included pictures of my before and after I used the acne treatments together for about a month or two. The swelling had reduced significantly and when I used foundation my face looked smooth.  After clearing up the acne I had to start working on the scars. As I mentioned before once the acne clears up it leaves behind scars and dark spots. Below are pictures of when the acne cleared up and left behind the “dents” in my skin. How to Get Rid of Acne Using the Treatments

It’s very important to only use the Differin gel before you go to bed. If used during the day you run the risk of badly irritating and damaging your skin and you can get dark spots as well. This is the skin care routine I did when I was using Differin Gel.

Nightly Routine

Using only your hands (not a face brush or washcloth) wash your face with warm water and a gentle face wash. Cetaphil was the one I used at the time. It has no lather but it deep cleans your skin without stripping it of its natural oils. Now that the acne has cleared I use Rice Water Bright Foaming Cleanser which is helping to remove the dark spots left behind from the acne.

Pat your skin dry and follow with a hydrating toner. A toner helps restore your skin’s natural PH balance so your skin won’t have to work so hard. The less work you give your skin the fewer signs of aging.

Once the toner has dried apply a thin layer of Differin Gel avoiding the eye area. Wait a few seconds for the gel to soak in.

Lastly, you need to moisturize your skin the gel will dry your skin so it’s essential to apply a night moisturizer every day and night. I also recommend an eye cream, an Antioxidant Lip Treatment before heading to bed.

It’s important to wash your face every morning not only to wash off the night treatment but also to wash off the toxins your body released through your skin while you slept. If you don’t wash them off than the toxins soak back into your body which defeats the purpose. A morning shower energizes your body and washes away the impurities that your body has released. But if there is no time for a morning shower than washing your face is the next best thing.

Morning Routine

With the same cleanser as the night before wash your face with warm water.

Next, apply the toner

Then apply the Benzoyl Peroxide and wait a few seconds to let it soak in. *

Since benzoyl peroxide will dry your skin and might cause peeling I recommend using the Anew Hydra Fusion Replenishing Serum with the Anew Hydra Fusion Gel Cream. Together they will replenish your skin with hydration that lasts all day so your skin has a better chance of not peeling.

If your skin gets extremely dry you can use this power couple; Anew Hydra Fusion 1.5% Hyaluronic Acid Serum and Anew Hydra Fusion Snow Cream. Together they drench your skin with hydration that lasts all day.

Your skin will become very sensitive when you use this acne treatment. Try not to stay in the sun for long periods of time. Applying a day moisturizer with at least an SPF of 50 would be recommended. Eye cream and lip conditioner are both a good addition to your skin care regimen.

How to get rid of acne for good is not impossible just have a good skin care regimen and good eating habits and you will see the difference in no time. I no longer use treatments and have been clear of acne for three years. I only get small flare-ups when I put sugar or processed foods into my body. That’s why I know that our eating habits really affect our skin. I wash my face two times a day and protect it from the sun as best as I can. It’s all about putting in a bit of effort remember beauty starts within. The picture below of me applying my night cream is the most recent picture as of 11/2019.
